A solo exhibition and poetry book launch by Piet Nieuwland

‘A look back to now’ at Hangar Gallery celebrates the extensive creative talent of artist and poet Piet Nieuwland. This exhibition is an exciting combination of new and older vibrant paintings and intricate drawings with an environmental kaupapa. Piet’s interest in fauna, flora and the landscape of Aotearoa features prominently in his work.
The exhibition preview will include the launch of Piet’s new poetry book ‘As light into water.’ This latest book of engaging and complex poetry was published by Cyberwit and features cover art by Piet. There will also be a launch of an LP record titled ‘Dark Side Moon Yoga and Wetland’ by The Dirty Little Runts featuring poetry readings by Piet Nieuwland.
Piet Nieuwland is a productive and enthusiastic creative of Whangarei. As a poet his work features in the Civic Arcade mural, and he is the editor of Northlands annual poetry anthology Fast Fibres Poetry. He coven’s the monthly gatherings of poets at ONEONESIX and the National Poetry Day events throughout Northland. At the inaugural Whangarei Fringe Festival 2021 he featured in ‘Intangential’ a very well received collaboration of music, poetry and dance. His poems and flash fiction have been widely published in Aotearoa NZ, Australia, USA, India and elsewhere.
Piet has established a reputation as a visual artist, he presented a stunning visual and poetic Pechakucha performance at the Old Library, and has exhibited solo shows at ArtSouls Gallery and Manaia Arts as well as numerous poetry and art exhibitions at the Geoff Wilson and Hangar Galleries.
His poems and art grace a new anthology Take Flight, and he features in Creative Conservation, a new book of conservation artists from around Aotearoa. His earlier poetry books such as The Metabolic Circus , Mobileyezation, and Tzarinas Equinoctal were limited editions with unique hand created covers illustrated with his characteristic pen drawings.
As a self taught poet and artist without any formal training he has carved his own path beyond the whims and vicissitudes of popular taste. This has required persistence and a long term commitment to success while working full time and supporting the lives of his three children.
