As an artist of Pakeha heritage, should I study those who came before me, or should I distance myself? Should I only consider artworks by people I agree with? Is there any difference between Augustus Earle, who played an active role in the colonial project and other Pakeha, manuhiri or tauiwi artists who makes representations of this land? Sitting in my living room, not far from where Earle’s original watercolours were made, I am content to look and not have the answers. I do know that 1827 was not actually that long ago. Some of these trees could still be alive.

It’s taken me decades of practice to grow these vegetables – planting again and again, year after year – watching, failing and succeeding.
Drawing them is a time to examine and find marks that express their unique form and mauri . This practice offers temporary relief from a growing sense of unease – will they continue to grow again and again year after year?
Walk

Ellen (Ellie) Smith

Every morning, before the day starts, I walk from one end of our bay to the other with my dog Charlie.
We walk together but inhabit different worlds.
Charlie patrols the perimeter of his territory – he has new smells to check out and to leave behind.
I am trying to extend the emptiness of sleep, hold off the ‘list of things-to-do’ and let the growing light, the cool breeze, the salt smell and the familiar skylines print their meanings on my day.
Reaching the end of the bay we turn, I put in my headphones to ring my mother, and follow the white, waving flag home.
